Developing your child’s musical sense of self and confidence right in front of your eyes…

Hello Rockness Music family!  This week we are talking about classical music and its profound effects on young children.  In our classes, children and toddlers come alive while being exposed to many new types of music.  Whether we are banging on the drums, dancing with our family and friends, or experiencing a new genre of music for the first time, our teachers have the delight of engaging with you and your kids as their eyes and hearts open wide from the new sounds they are hearing.  Now if only we can get them to open their mouths when being introduced to their veggies!

It’s no surprise that classical music has its way with all of us.

From Beethoven to Bach, each composition has a hidden treasure that will peak your child’s interest. From a foreboding piece such as Sonata Number 14 aka Moonlight Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven that has elements of intrigue and mystery, to the joyous Brandenburg Concerto Number 4 by Bach that can turn a crying baby into a smiling ray of sunshine, classical music has a great effect on the soul and the brainwaves.

Who knows? You might even love it too!  So next time your little one is being fussy, try putting on some Bach and see where the journey takes you.

We’d love to hear from you.

What styles of music does your child respond to at home?  From the latest Bruno Mars jam, “Uptown Funk” to one of the old classics like  “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” by The Supremes, let us know some of the hits your family rocks out to.

May we suggest…

Rockness Music’s founder, Michael Napolitano’s music has it all!

You will love it!

Thanks for joining us for our ten-week Winter Wonder Mommy and Me Classes!

Rockness Music embraces the child in all of us, giving parents the advantage of aiding their child’s learning explorations.  Winter Wonder offers the freedom and knowledge to keep exploring, discovering, and learning a bit more every day as our children prepare to attend preschool and kindergarten.

Together with you, Rockness Music would like to bring awareness to the new experiences our world has in store for our children every day. Let’s take the time to listen and look at everything a little closer.

Reminisce your childhood!

Remember the wonder we felt as a child when we experienced new things?  The wonder when we heard a sound for the first time, stepped on crunchy ice, held a guitar, or had our first ice cream cone?

These new discoveries are an important learning experience and a beautiful time of life. Regardless of what we do, our children will discover new things every day. If we help apply ourselves as parents, our children’s discoveries will be embellished. We hope that the discovery, and wonder that is Rockness Music will find it’s way into your home.

Perhaps you will discover the music a dishwasher, a tea kettle, or even your hands and feet can make.  Check out Rockness Music’s Everything Makes a Sound video to get some ideas! There is no better time than winter to explore new things in your own home, and we are excited to help!

Use your imagination!

We are going to act like robots, grow like solid oak, cook pancakes and, with our sense of wonder, discover new sounds, songs, and make new friends. Lets all be inspired by our…..

Winter Wonder Mommy and Me Music Classes!

We, at Rockness Music have a new ORIGINAL ROCKIN’ Christmas song for you to enjoy!  With more music from your favorite Mommy and Me Music class, Rockness Music brings you the joy of the Christmas season with a family song for children of all ages!  Check out our interview Michael Napolitano- if you keep reading, we have a free download for you.

Tell us about the NEW Rockness Music Christmas song. What was your inspiration for this?

I think I have to start with a little personal history. Christmas music is a beautiful and a very specific art form. What I mean is, Christmas music needs to be listened to in the right context. Honestly, I can’t bear it before Thanksgiving or after New Years. Even during the fuzzy christmas season too much of it gets on my nerves – so I spread it out – I have about 100 christmas LP’s ranging from children’s to classical. My favorites are Dean Martin, Perry Como and Burl Ives- super smooth singing with angelic choirs of voices in the background, strings, bells and all the trimmings for a wintery soundscape.

I never imagined writing a Christmas song. Someone actually suggested it. I wrote this song last year a couple of days before Christmas – I feel like you cannot capture a “fake” feeling, I needed to be in that drowsy, hot cocoa-induced Christmas mood.

The song itself, like many of the songs I write, developed quickly – a stanza popped right out followed by a  catchy chorus. The kids, my wife and I sang this tune all week.

This year I wrote the remainder of the lyrics. All I had at first was “Deck the halls with boughs of holly, rock n roll with Dad and Mommy” – which is an awesome line, but not quite enough to fill a song.

What was it like creating your own Christmas song? Were there any challenges putting together the lyrics and laying down the rhythm?

This song was most definitely challenging. My goal for children’s music, is to make it family music. Music that parents not only tolerate, but enjoy, and find themselves singing along or after they turn the track off. Christmas songs are the same way. The topic of Christmas gives a writer so much to work with, yet it’s so specific and it’s been done so many times its hard to be different and it’s hard to balance on that line of cheesy or good. Being that children’s music hosts the same issue for me this became a really fun challenge.

I took phrases from some of the most well-known Christmas songs and put them together to write a new song all together. After the fact, I realized I was inspired by Build to Spill’s song “You were Right” (an amazing song using lyrics from classic rock artists like Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and John Cougar Mellencamp).

The song started with guitar and vocals, I thought it was too normal, sounded like anything else. I don’t usually have this problem, typically the ideas flow. I’m a drummer first so I did just that. I kept the vocals, and played a drum pattern over the melody with no accompaniment, just drums and vocals. EUREKA! A catchy bass line followed and what we now here is a real rock Christmas song. There are some really neat sounds I was able to conjure up to give an overall christmas feeling. Listen for the melodica, chimes, palm muted guitars, and of course sleigh bells.

What was it like having your family get on the track with you? Should we anticipate a whole Napolitano Holiday album in the future?

Yes, that is the plan. We most recently had a pick up drum circle after my daughter’s birthday, it really rattled my creative cage. We are working on a bunch of Napolitano family creations at the moment. Music is so special to me, and anytime I play music with my friends or family it is just that much more special.

What was the first Christmas song you remember listening to and loving as a kid?

There are two, first is what you hear at the very top of this track, there is a music box playing ‘White Christmas’ – this was a gift from my grandfather – I listened to it over an dover. It’s an emotional melody and song. A lot of these christmas songs are in minor keys and pull at the heartstrings, this one does that to me.

My all time favorite songs is Jingle Bells by Frank Sinatra.

“I love those J-I-N-G-L-E Bells, BONG”…..great song!!! Everything about this. It’s fun, it’s light and it’s so very happy. The production, the swinging vocals, the choir singing – it’s just an incredible piece of work.

You said that in your family a huge Christmas celebration is a tradition- what makes family such an important part of Christmas for you?

I think it may be the other way around. Christmas is an important part of our family.
That time we all sit together and talk, and eat. Like any holiday, it’s special. You take those moments, forget about all your worries and embrace in the love and laughter of your family.  Now don’t get me wrong, the food is a huge part of it! We are a big Italian family, the food is fantastic!

Do you have a favorite Christmas tradition?

I love watching people open the gifts I buy them. I really do. But my favorite Christmas Tradition is singing the Twelve Days of Christmas with the entire Napolitano Family. Which includes my father, his 6 siblings and their children and children’s children. All 50 of us, Old uncles and aunts, the little kids – everyone has their part (and have for years) Myself, my brother,  and my Uncle Mauro & Aunt Ida  are Four calling birds.
My father and I dress in ruffle tuxes and conduct the song, we draw on fake mustaches it’s hilarious.

If Santa had a favorite christmas song, what do you think it would be?

Bruce Springsteen’s “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”

The holiday season is among us! The leaves are falling, the snow is coming, and we can’t wait cuddle up with family and hold a warm cup of hot cocoa in our hands! However, not all families and little ones are as fortunate as we are. Some will be cold, hungry, and without a home. During this season of giving thanks, we at Rockness Music think it is extremely important to give to those in need. Donating to charity is a great way to teach your little ones the importance of appreciating what they have and spreading joy amongst others who are less fortunate.

1. Clothing Drives: Donating used clothes is a great way to help those in need. If your child has clothes he or she has outgrown, help them sort the clothes out and put them in boxes. Explain to your child why you are donating the items (for the little boys and girls out there who need it more!) and have them go to the drive with you.

2. Toy Drives/Toys for Tots: There are so many little rockstars who don’t have the equipment to rock on!  If there are some books lying around the house that have already been read, consider donating them to a shelter or local school in need. Donating some toys that your child no longer plays with can make some other little ones very happy. We know this could be difficult- children become newly attached to toys they abandon once the toys are about to be taken away. This could be a good moment to teach your child  the importance of sharing with others.

3. Food Baskets: Putting together food baskets is a common and easy way to give back! Go shopping at the local supermarket or clean out your pantry for canned goods (and other imperishable items) that can go to families. If you want to be super generous, try buying two of everything you need for Thanksgiving. The second set of everything you buy can create a huge package that you can send to a shelter or soup kitchen for their own holiday meals.

4. Create a Charity Jar: Making a charity bank is a nice way for you and your child to give. Whenever they find spare change around the house, tell them to put it in the charity jar (which you can decorate if you wish). Or, tell them to remember whenever someone does something nice for them. Have them put a coin in the jar every time someone gives to them so they can see how great a feeling giving to others is. Have your child see you put money in the charity jar- children often copy what they see adults around them doing!

5. Helping Others: Whether it’s helping cleaning up your next door neighbor’s yard, or giving the elderly couple down the street an invite to Thanksgiving dinner, reaching out to your immediate community can go a long way.  Think of those around you who might need some extra care this Holiday season and figure out ways you can give to them.
A little giving goes a long way. We hope you and your families have a loving and giving Holiday season!

What is your little rocker going to be for Halloween?

September is right around the corner, and for some of you, this time September will be even more special! That’s right, your little one is getting ready for his or her first day of school!

Now there’s a bunch of emotions that you could be feeling right now- happiness, nervousness, excitement, anxiety, and even relief! But not to worry, you have prepared your child for this moment since the second you held them in your arms.

Here are some tips you can use to help make the transition to preschool a really rockin’ time.

Practicing preschool makes perfect

1. When you get closer to the first day, you should start to mimic the routines your child will soon experience. Try incorporating activities like sing-a-longs, read-alouds, circle time and even nap time into your daily schedule. With read-alouds, have them sit across from you in criss cross style.

2. Get your child used to self-helping tasks like zipping up their jacket and putting on their backpack. You can make quick games out of it, like seeing how fast they can put on their shoes (safely) or how quick they can pack up all their belongings. See how your child helps themselves, how easy is it for them to take out their lunch and eat on their own? Observing things like this can help you help your child take on the big girl and boy tasks of preschool.

3. If the preschool your child is going to has an open park or playground near, take them there to play! Chances are they will be playing in that place at some point, so why not get them accustomed to the area?

4. Get your child accustomed to sharing, especially if they don’t have a sibling. Tell them to ask for things politely, and that everyone should get a turn at things that are fun!

5. Start implementing a bedtime if you haven’t already. You don’t want to wait until the night before to force them to go to bed at a time they’re aren’t used to. A rockstar needs his sleep!

Don’t worry about a thing, cause every little thing

(and one!) is gonna be alright!

1. It’s important not to worry your child about preschool, but at the same time listen to the concerns they may have. Always reassure them that you’ll be there to pick them up everyday, that the people will be nice, and that they will have fun learning and making new friends! Let them know that many people go to preschool and grow up to be just fine!

2. If your child starts to act out by throwing tantrums and clinging on to you, know that this is natural.

3. Most importantly, reassure your child that you still love and them and you’re not abandoning them! Let them know that they will still have Mommy-and-Me or Daddy-and-Me time! Even plan out a weekend schedule if that helps, and let them pick an activity to do very Saturday!

It’s the final countdown!

1. When the days dwindle down and the first day of preschool gets closer and closer, start to shop with your little one for clothes and supplies! Let them feel and understand how much they are a part of this, and how rockin’ it is for big boys and girls to get ready for school! Having them pick out their backpack is a great way for them to feel like a big kid making big decisions!

2. Label everything! Clothes, supplies, lunch- put your little one’s name all over it! Show your child everything that belongs to them, so they know what they have in their backpack and they know what to bring home.

3. Make sure your child is up to date on immunizations or medication that they take. Make sure the school is aware of any medication or special needs that your child has!

The Night Before

1. Have your child pick out a reasonable outfit for the first day (as long as it’s weather and preschool proof!)

2. Make sure they get a good night’s rest! Remember a 2-4 year old child should be getting 9-12 hours of sleep a night (not including daytime naps)!

3. Also plan out your morning! Know what time you should get up, what time you should wake up your little one, and what you’ll make for breakfast and their lunch.

4. Pack your child’s backpack. The less you have to do in the morning, the less stressful it will be!

The Day is Here!

1. Make sure you wake up and leave enough time for you and your little one to get ready and pictures to be taken- be sure to capture this major moment!

2. When you pack their lunch, make sure you pick some of their favorite foods!

3. Let them take a trinket to school on the first day to help them transition from home to school. It could be a small stuffed animal, a tiny favorite toy, or a picture of your family to make them feel at home.

4. When you drop them off, stay around for a couple of minutes. If you leave too soon, it might worry your child.

5. This might be a nervous morning for you, but try your best not to let your child see that! If you look worried, your child will most likely pick up on your emotions and feel that they have to worry as well.

6. Think of a special goodbye! A fun high-five, a kiss to put in their pocket all day, or a happy hug that lasts all day- a cute goodbye can help the sendoff go smoothly!

7. When you finally decide to leave, don’t run back if you hear your child crying for you.  We know this is the hardest part. No one wants to hear their child upset, but this is a common reaction on the first day. Your child will be okay! You prepared them for this day! You both are ready! If you are really worried, you can call the school later on during the day to make sure your little one is alright.

We hope these tips will help you get in tip-top shape for the first day! Your little ones will soon be rockin’ out at preschool! So don’t stress!

Here are five movies we think every little one should see!

 The Sound of Music

This musical classic that stars Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer is a movie that your children can enjoy just as much as you did when you first saw it! The plot revolves around a woman named Maria, who becomes a governess for a strict naval captain and his family. With the infectious energy of music, Maria starts to lighten up and brighten up things around the house. This movie is packed with joy, laughter, and songs- just a few of our “favorite things”!

  Mary Poppins

Starring Julie Andrews, as Mary Poppins, this musical film features a posh upper-class family getting their world shaken up by an eccentric and lively nanny. Ms. Poppins teaches the family the joys of life, including how to have fun. Watching this movie with your little one is sure to be nothing but a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious time!

Annie

This movie joins the list of classics that anyone at any age can enjoy! Annie tries to escape her orphanage, run by the treacherous Ms. Hannigan, in efforts to find her real parents. This movie is a great break from the struggles of the day to day “hard knock life”.

 The Wizard of Oz

Take a trip down the yellow brick road with this timeless movie. Follow Dorothy as she tries to find the Wizard in hopes of finding her back home. Along the way she meets great friends and sings great songs!

Newsies

This film shows the importance of standing up for what you believe in- a lesson we all learn in life at one point or another! A band of newspaper boys come together when their bosses try to take advantage of their labor. Read- I mean watch- all about it!

So grab some popcorn, a cozy blanket maybe, and enjoy these tune filled films with your family! Tell us what you think! Are any of these movies already your household favorite?
