Twins And Multiples In Parent-And-Me Music Class

We've had plenty of twins in our classes. It often starts with a phone call. A parent asks, a little unsure, whether it's okay to bring both babies. A few weeks later they're in the circle with one twin on their lap and the other crawling over to look at the drums.

If you have twins or triplets and you're wondering whether a parent-and-me music class makes sense, here's what we've seen.

Twins are welcome

Our Grown Up & Me classes are for kids ages 0 to 4. They meet once a week for 45 minutes, and grown-ups stay for the whole class. Twins fit right in. Some families bring babies who aren't sitting up yet. Others bring two busy three-year-olds who want every shaker in the room. Both are fine with us.

If your twins are still babies, our post on your baby's first music class walks through what to expect that first day.

Why it helps twins to meet other kids

Twins spend a lot of time together. They share a room, a nap schedule, and most of their toys. That closeness is great, and it also means most of their day is spent with the same playmate.

Music class gives them time with babies and toddlers who aren't each other. They watch another child play a drum. They hand a shaker to someone new. They get used to a teacher and to other grown-ups in the room. We think it's really good for twins to get out of the house and meet other children.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has an article on raising twins as two separate people. It says each twin benefits from the chance to develop their own interests, friendships, talents, and sense of self. A weekly class is one easy place to work on that.

One grown-up or two?

In most of our classes there's one grown-up for each child. With twins, it's worth asking us about. If you'd like to bring a second grown-up, like a partner or a grandparent, just get in touch and we'll figure it out with you.

Lots of families also take turns on who brings the kids. If a grandparent or another caregiver will be coming some weeks, this post on who can bring your toddler to music class might help.

What to expect with two in class

A few things we see a lot with twins:

  • They won't always do the same thing. One might dance in the middle of the circle while the other watches from your lap. That's normal, and both kids are taking it in.
  • Their good days won't always line up. Some weeks one twin is all in and the other is tired or fussy. It usually evens out over time.
  • One might hang back. It's common for a toddler to stay close to their grown-up for the first few weeks. Here's more on why kids stick to your leg in music class and what to do about it.
  • Taking turns comes up. If they both want the same instrument, it's fine to help them trade. Our teachers are used to this.

You don't need to keep them side by side the whole time. If one twin wanders over to sit near another family, that's fine. It's part of getting to know other kids.

Getting out the door with two

Leaving the house with twins takes planning. A few things that help:

  • Pick a class time that fits around naps. Two rested kids make for a much easier morning.
  • Pack the bag the night before, with diapers and a change of clothes for each.
  • Give yourself a few extra minutes to park and unload. Nobody minds if you walk in right as class starts.

After a few weeks it usually gets easier, because the kids start to know the routine too.
