Indoor Toddler Party Entertainment For Winter And Extreme Weather

A lot of the parties we play are booked for the backyard and end up in the living room. Some are planned indoors from the start because the birthday falls in January. Others get moved because it's 95 degrees out, or the forecast flips the day before.

If you know your party will be inside, or you just want a plan that doesn't depend on the weather, here's what we've learned from playing a lot of indoor parties for little kids.

Plan for weather you can't predict

Winter birthdays are too cold for a yard party. Summer birthdays can be too hot for toddlers to be outside for long. And in spring and fall, you often don't know until the week of.

Even short trips outside in the cold need some care with little kids. The American Academy of Pediatrics' winter safety tips say to set reasonable limits on time spent playing outside, give kids a place for regular indoor breaks to warm up, and change them out of wet clothes right away. For a party, that usually means keeping the fun inside and having a spot near the door for wet boots and coats.

Hot days are their own problem. A yard with no shade gets uncomfortable fast for babies and toddlers, and nobody wants to dance in direct sun. Moving the music into a cool room keeps the kids playing longer, and the grown-ups are a lot happier too.

Keep everything in one place

An indoor party works best when the main activity happens in one spot for a set amount of time. Guests come in and out. Someone's changing a diaper, someone's grabbing a snack, a grandparent arrives late. With one clear space for the entertainment, it's easy for people to slip back in and join.

A Rockness party fits that pretty well. We set up in one room, play for 45 minutes, and the kids are playing instruments the whole time. When we're done, the space is yours again for pizza and cake. You can see what's included on our kids' birthday party entertainment page.

Choose something clean

This is a big one when the party is in your home. Bubbles leave the floor slippery. Art supplies end up on the couch, the rug and somebody's good sweater. Anything with glitter, paint or slime is still turning up weeks later.

With music, nothing gets damaged and there's nothing to clean up. We bring the instruments and props, and we take them with us when we leave. The kids get to play with everything, and your house looks the same as it did before the party.

What a 45-minute indoor music party includes

Every party gets the same full set, inside or out:

  • Live guitar and drum
  • A drum circle where every child gets sticks and a drum, and we all sing happy birthday
  • A shaker party
  • Instrument show-and-tell with new instruments to try
  • A dance party with props and songs from Michael & the Rockness Monsters

All you need is a clear spot on the floor. A living room with the coffee table pushed aside is usually plenty. A basement playroom or a community room works too.

Everyone can join, at any age

Indoor parties tend to pack a lot of ages into a small space. You might have babies on laps, toddlers running around and a few older cousins. Music works for all of them. Babies can shake a shaker on a grown-up's lap while toddlers drum and older kids lead the dancing. The adults usually end up joining in too.

Quick answers

How much space do we need for an indoor music party?

Just a clear spot on the floor where the kids can sit, drum and dance. A living room with the furniture pushed back is usually enough.

Will it make a mess in our house?

No. We bring all the instruments and props and take them with us when we leave, and there's nothing to clean up afterward.

Can a party booked for the backyard move inside?

Yes. The party is the same 45 minutes of live music wherever we set up, so it works indoors or out.

Does indoor music entertainment work for babies and older kids together?

Yes. Babies can shake and listen, toddlers can drum, and older kids can lead the dance party. Mixed-age guest lists are welcome.
