How Long Should A Toddler Birthday Party Run?
We get this question on almost every party call. A parent has the date and the guest list, and now they're staring at the invitation wondering what time to put for the end. Too short and people barely get their coats off. Too long and the toddlers fall apart before the cake.
Here's how we'd plan it, based on a lot of parties with little kids and what most parents end up doing.
Most parents plan about two hours
For a toddler party, about two hours from the first guest to the last goodbye works for most families. That's enough time for people to arrive, eat, play, have cake and leave before nap time hits.
Age matters a bit. PBS KIDS for Parents suggests keeping a first birthday under an hour if you're inviting other babies, about 90 minutes for 3-year-olds, and about two hours for 4- and 5-year-olds. If your child still naps, plan around that first and work the party times out from there.
Why the entertainment is 45 minutes
Our entertainment runs 45 minutes. That's long enough for a real show and short enough that little kids stay with it the whole time.
We use a set list that keeps the kids moving from one thing to the next. They play instruments, drum, dance and sing. Nobody is asked to sit still for long, and each part is short enough that a 2-year-old can stay with it. A Rockness party includes:
- Live guitar and drum
- A drum circle where every child gets sticks and a drum, and we all sing happy birthday
- A shaker party
- Instrument show-and-tell with new instruments
- A dance party with props and songs from Michael & the Rockness Monsters

A sample timeline that works
Here's a schedule Michael often shares with parents. Shift the times to fit your day.
- 11:00: Guests arrive. Put out chips, water and juice for the kids.
- 11:30: The entertainment starts.
- 12:15: The entertainment ends and the pizza goes out right away.
- 12:30: Cake, and then everyone heads home.
With this plan, the whole party runs about an hour and a half to two hours, depending on how long goodbyes take. The music lands in the middle, after everyone has arrived and before anyone is hungry or tired enough to melt down.
Leaving room after cake for kids to play a little longer is fine. Just don't plan a second big activity. Most toddlers are done by then.
Give guests a half hour to arrive
Families with little kids almost never show up on time. Someone needed a diaper change in the car. Someone else had to go back for the gift. A 30-minute arrival window means the music can start with most of the guests there.
Keep the snacks simple during this part. Chips, water and juice are plenty. You don't want kids full before pizza, and you don't want a lot of food out once the instruments come out.
Serve food right after the music
When the music ends, the kids are a little tired and a little hungry. That's the best time to bring out the pizza. If you wait, they start wandering, and it's harder to get everyone back to the table.
Cake comes next, and then people can say their goodbyes. Ending on cake gives the party a clear finish, and parents can leave without feeling like they're walking out on something. Our post on a stress-free first birthday party has more tips for keeping the day simple.
A few things that help
- Put the end time on the invitation so families can plan naps.
- Have one grown-up in charge of food so you can be with your kid during the music.
- Clear a spot on the floor before guests arrive. We bring everything else.
- Let the birthday kid sit up front for the drum circle so they're in the middle of the photos.
- If you're mixing babies with older kids, read our tips on music for a mixed-age party.

Quick answers
How long should a toddler birthday party be?
Most parents plan about two hours from arrival to goodbye. For a first birthday with other babies, or if your child naps early, a shorter party can work better.
When should the entertainment start?
About 30 minutes after the party start time. That gives late families time to arrive before the music begins.
How long is a Rockness birthday party?
Every Rockness party is 45 minutes of live music, with kids moving between instruments, drumming, dancing and singing.
Should we serve food before or after the music?
Keep it to light snacks before, then put the pizza out right when the music ends. Cake comes after that, and then everyone heads home.
