It’s Cold, Now What? 4 Indoor Activities for Preschoolers

Get Moving With 4 Indoor Activities for Preschoolers

Cold weather doesn’t have to mean restless kids indoors. With a little creativity, teachers can transform their classrooms into hubs of movement, teamwork, and fun. Here are a few indoor activities for preschoolers that will keep children active, engaged, and smiling all winter long.

Indoor Obstacle Course: The Kinja Warrior Challenge

Think preschool obstacle course meets ninja warrior — or as we like to call it, Kinja Warrior! This is one of the simplest and most exciting indoor activities for preschoolers because you can build it right in your classroom.

Use string or tape to create a zigzagging path across the floor. Add fun stations: hula hoops to stand inside and do a silly move, circles to hop or skip through, and a long “void” the kids must leap across before rejoining the winding path.

Not only does this get kids moving, but it also fosters teamwork and community. Build it with the children, name it together, and even take pictures to share with families. Rebuild a new course each week to keep preschoolers agile, creative, and active through the cold months.

Preschool Yoga & Stretching Indoors

You don’t have to be a yogi to help kids stretch their bodies. Articles like this one on preschool yoga show simple moves perfect for the classroom. Try setting a timer once a day to pause, get up, and stretch.

This type of indoor movement activity for preschoolers helps burn off energy, reset focus, and increase oxygen flow to the brain — here’s an article about that.  Teachers benefit too: a quick stretch can be a much-needed reset in the middle of the day.

Jumping to Music: Movement Songs for Preschoolers

Believe it or not, jumping is one of the best activities for kids. In Rockness Music classrooms, when we do a jumping song in winter, kids often cough by the end — because their lungs are clearing out! That doesn’t happen as much in summer.

Pick a new song each week, or use Michael & the Rockness Monsters’ “When I’m Jumping” (SoundCloud link). Other great options: “Growing Bigger” and “Robot Song”.

This simple indoor activity for preschool classrooms gives kids three minutes of joyful movement, breathing, and laughter. And when teachers join in, the energy and good vibes multiply.

Enrichment Programs: Sports & Music Indoors

Beyond DIY classroom activities, enrichment programs are another excellent option to keep children moving. Sports programs like Amazing Athletes bring coaches, equipment, and structured lessons right into schools.

And don’t forget music! Rockness Music offers music & movement programs filled with songs, shakers, props, and guided activities. From “Growing Bigger” to “Robot Song”, we combine music with movement to get kids thinking, grooving, and having fun.

If budgets are tight, stick with the first three indoor activities for preschoolers. But if you want to expand, sports or music programs can take things to the next level.
